J MAYS

Upon graduation from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, J Mays already had caught the attention of the German auto company Audi. Since then he has raised the public profile of the automobile designer through his work with the world’s most prestigious car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, and Ford.

For more than four decades, Mays has helped define automobile culture with his unique intuitiveness for the emotional connection we have with our cars.  Along the way he has created some of the most iconic models in automobile history. He is responsible for Concept One, the precursor to Volkswagen’s New Beetle. From the Aston Martin DB9 and the Audi TT to the Ford Mustang and F-150, the creations of Mays run the gamut in design, technology, and function.  When Pixar studios wanted to visit a design studio while planning for the production of Cars, they consulted with Mays.

Mays has used his success as a platform to challenge the voice and thinking that traditionally has kept automobile designers separate from those that shape buildings, furniture, and consumer products.  His achievements have been spotlighted by the BBC,  profiled by architecture critic Paul Goldberger in The New Yorker,  and his work has been the subject of a major museum exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

He started his career with the VW Group, contributing his design talents to projects in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Italy. His touch can be seen on many production and concept vehicles.

In 2011, General Motors Company recognized Vivien's talent and brought him on as a lead designer. He played a vital role in crafting unique strategies for the company's core brands, while also envisioning the future of mobility, platforms, and services. His work had a lasting impact, drawing in technology investments and forming valuable partnerships. His visionary concepts effectively conveyed the company's vision to investors and collaborators.

In 2016, Ford Motor Company sought Vivien to oversee advanced interior design. Over seven years, he and his team played a crucial part in helping Ford make its mark in the emerging new energy market. This experience sharpened his skills in creating designs that put people at the center. Under his guidance, the advanced design team transformed Ford and Lincoln interiors, strengthening the company's presence in the market, expanding its customer base, and earning numerous innovation awards.

Recently, Vivien embraced a new challenge with Cadillac, where he and his team are dedicated to shaping the next chapter for this iconic American luxury brand.

Beyond his professional achievements, Vivien finds joy in exploring fashion and architecture. With his family, he embarks on adventures to new places, restores historical furniture, and cherishes a 1986.5 Porsche 928. Notably, he acquired a rare Venturi 300 bi-turbo a few years ago, leading him to become an active member of the Venturi Owners Club.
